The Notes in an Ab Major Seventh Chord

The Root

You'll have no trouble finding the root of an Ab Major Seventh chord, because it's what gives an Ab Major Seventh chord it's name: It's the note Ab.

The 3rd

The third of an Ab Major Seventh chord is C. The third is up four half-steps from the Root.

Finding C from Ab step by step:

  • Start on: Ab
  • Step 1: move up to A
  • Step 2: move up to Bb
  • Step 3: move up to Cb
  • Step 4: Land on C

  • C is a major third above Ab.

The Maj 7th

The major seventh of an Ab Major Seventh chord is G. The major seventh is a half-step from the Root. A half-step means that there are no piano keys in between. This is why the major seventh is one of the easiest notes to find.

Finding G from Ab step by step:

  • Start on: Ab
